Dissemination of Research Findings Innovatively on Fire Safety
Inhalt
Globally and in Malaysia, unintentional injury takes away more lives of the population irrespective of their age and occupational status. Fire and Burn is among the top leading causes of injury and the effects by and large remain lifelong. As academic institution, we undertook the research to understand the status of fire and burn incidents involving school community. As most academic and research institutions will disseminate their research findings through academic channels (conferences, seminars, journals and proceedings). Only academic community gets the privilege on this findings and not the general population. As a public health issues, to address it we need active participation from the general public and to make that happen, we need to start reaching out to them and share our research findings. As a first step In an innovative way, we translated our research findings into a 2 minute video clip and circulated out to the general public via WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms which was further shared and multiplied its outreach. The content covered on key facts of fire and burn injuries in the country. It also touched on the top causes of burn and scald injuries (hot utensils, hot iron, hot water heater, hot motorcycle exhaust pipe and firecrackers) which are hazards to us and need to be more careful. It also touched on the burn incidents and the wrong type of treatment taken to address burn which we all need to avoid it.
Ziel und Zweck
There are few main safety messages crossed over to the target group (General population – Children, Youth, Adult and Elderly people) of this safety initiative. They are:
1. Disseminating the knowledge to the General population – Children, Youth, Adult and Elderly people on the key facts of fire and burn injuries in Malaysia
2. Disseminating the knowledge to the General population – Children, Youth, Adult and Elderly people on the top causes of burn and scald injuries
3. Disseminating the knowledge to the General population – Children, Youth, Adult and Elderly people on how burns are treated (the right and wrong way)
4. Disseminating the knowledge to the General population – Children, Youth, Adult and Elderly people on how every one of us can keep our home safe from fire incidents.
Fire and burn injuries are huge health and economic burden to the individual, community and nation. There is a need for a transformation in the academic community to start reaching out to the general population on their research findings in addition to their existing reach out to the academic community via academia channels. For all public health issue, its unethical not to put in any extra effort to reach out to the main target audience (general public) for a change to take place in order to address the public health issue. On that ground this noble effort was undertaken to share and disseminate research findings in a simplest form which requires action from the public to make a change at population level. A two minute video clip summarises the main findings on fire and burn and shared out in simple language and infographics to empower the general population for their safety, health and wellbeing.
