Tribe Culture Change and Wolseley developed the course ‘Essentials of Safety Management’, which turns standard health and safety training on its head, to create a completely immersive, interactive and lively experience, while still containing a serious, thought-provoking message for delegates to take away.
Objetivos y metas
To drive health and safety engagement amongst managers with an innovative, interactive and practical training day • To provide a management course that meets our legal health and safety requirements but moves away from the standard PowerPoint format of simply ‘telling’ to something much more tangible • To ensure the course is practical, includes real life challenges, is relevant to the delegates and allows open discussion in a forum • To explore the emotional and moral aspect of health and safety, by including real life examples, from real employees, of the impact of an accident • To provide a fun and entertaining experience that aligns the training with the culture of competitiveness that is the nature of our business.
We initially set up a working party that spent six months gathering information from which the course could be developed. This involved going out on site, undertaking audits and speaking to staff and colleagues. We then appointed external health and safety culture specialists, Tribe Culture Change, to help us bring the information and training to life, with an innovative, creative solution to our requirements. The resulting training course consists of four modules, each covering different aspects of safety, such as housekeeping, safety culture, near miss reporting, accidents, risk assessment, incident management, attitudes and behaviours, as well as the emotional impact of an accident. Each module is based around a 360-degree panoramic tour of a typical Wolseley branch. A recurring theme of a ’20 second scan’ is used to allow delegates to briefly look at each panorama and complete a hazard spotting exercise. Risks and hazards, typical to our business, had been ‘planted’ in the photography. A facilitator manages each exercise, and responses to it, and each group is scored based on what they spot. The modules are interspersed with video clips showing dramatic recreations of incident scenarios and there are opportunities for group discussion, tasks, games and exercises throughout. Each module is summarised at the end with a ‘Who wants to be a million times safer’ quiz show style game with opponents able to ‘steal’ points from each other. The course concludes with a round up of the scores, with certificates and prizes awarded.
