"Earning a living"... working to live or living to work? Do we work to emancipate ourselves as individuals or to compare ourselves to others? Is it to feel useful in society or simply an act of survival? And what if it was all of these at one and the same time?
‘Ça va mal à'shop’ is a reflection on the failure of the system of work, our beliefs around work and the impact it has on our mental health. The film features workers and specialists from different backgrounds who reflect on the Quebec labour market. They share their stories and experiences with us in order that we can better understand the psychological issues facing Quebec workers.
Ziel und Zweck
In ‘Ça va mal à shop’, we invite the audience to question the ins and outs of work in our lives. Is our work a free choice or is it imposed on us? Do we have to love our work? What makes people happy at work? Simple questions that require time for inward reflection and evaluation, which is sometimes a difficult process.
To gain a better understanding of how work impacts our lives, this documentary features nine workers from diverse backgrounds who share their personal experiences with the camera. Some are currently experiencing psychological distress, while others have dealt with it in the past. Their distress is intrinsically linked to their work. What is surprising is that they all share a deep love for their work and are dedicated to meeting the demands and empowering themselves in their respective organizations.
Their stories shed light on the insidious nature of mental health issues in the workplace, which can develop slowly over months or even years. When left unaddressed, the consequences can be devastating.
Experts in the field, including a psychologist researcher, a doctor specializing in psychosocial risks, an ergonomist, and an occupational health and safety expert, offer insights on the organization of work, the causes of stress and the feeling of accomplishment. They provide an analysis of how work, when poorly managed, can adversely affect our mental health.
