Chrysotile widely use as roofs, insulating, ceilings, pipes, cement, brake lining, etc. Chrysotile is composed of very small and fine fibers that are invisible and it can cause non-malignant disease called asbestos related diseases (ARD).Chrysotile is also declared and proven as human carcinogen can cause malignant such pleural lung cancer (mesothelioma), lung cancer, laryngeal cancer and ovarian cancer. ILO predicted more than 100,000 workers died each year caused by asbestos.
There is one manufacturer in Cibinong Indonesia produced gland packing made from Chrysotile asbestos since 26 years ago. Chrysotile is use as gland packing main material because the durability and cost of the product. Everything changes when non-malignant asbestos related diseases was diagnosed in one of the workers in 2016. This is related to environment measurement of asbestos dust in workplace that several points of sample has exceeded the threshold limit value that set by the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower and the worker only using personal protective equipment of cotton mask while work.This case become the first ARD in Indonesia that approved as an occupational disease by the Indonesia government and being compensated by National Employees Social Security System. Facing this situation company stop use asbestos and substitutes asbestos to non-asbestos material. But it not over, Company faced difficulties to sell the product in the market. Profit decline, worker worried about their health and income and Buyer gone. Another ARD cases found in 5 workers that have been worked for more than 10 years in the company. 3 workers still work and 2 retirement workers. So Now Indonesia has 6 ARD cases proved as an occupational disease and being compensated. Other problem is asbestos removal and cleaning asbestos in the workplace. knowledge and resources for asbestos removal is very uncommon in Indonesia. Even Now after stop produce Asbestos product and asbestos measurement in environment is far away below TLV, but regarding to WHO there is no safe use of asbestos. There is no threshold limit value regarding the minimal amount of asbestos exposure that is safe for humans and to be free from the risk of ARD and mesothelioma. There is one company, asbestos manufacturer in Cibinong that already stop using asbestos and subtitute to non asbestos material. One of the worker had ARD. This is first case of ARD proven by Indonesian Government as occupational diseases and being compensated. Another five worker from this company also had ARD.
