Sinopsis

Facteurs de risque, produced in Canada by Savoir.média in collaboration with the IRSST (Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail), is a documentary series that examines occupational health and safety from all angles. It includes clear explanations and demonstrations by scientific researchers, moving testimonials from workers, practical tests, workplace visits, information capsules and humorous texts delivered by a comedian. It also highlights the approaches and technologies developed by IRSST researchers to prevent accidents. Each episode covers a specific theme from a very positive angle and with a focus on solutions for making workplaces safer. The serie is broadcast on television and the Internet.

The six episodes concern six major themes:

C’est dans l’air (It’s in the air)
Nothing could be more natural than breathing, yet in some work environments the air that people breathe contains toxic products, dust, asbestos or bacteria. Even bakers can develop occupational asthma due to flour. How then can we make the air healthier for people who work in these environments?

Le corps sous pression (The body under pressure)
The body is often put to the test in the workplace. Think of the heat on construction sites during the summer, but also the musculoskeletal disorders caused by repetitive movements, heavy loads or even day-long sitting positions. Yet possible solutions exist, ranging from applications for calculating heat stress to exoskeletons.

Les nouveaux défis (The new challenges)
The introduction of robots in certain workplaces has simplified some operations, but what are the risks for the people working with these robots? Some of the other new challenges and risks discussed are electronic waste, which contains heavy metals, and nanomaterials, which are easily absorbed into the body.

Ce bruit qui derange (The noise problem)

There are still many workplaces that are far too noisy, which, in the long run can cause hearing problems even if workers are provided with hearing protectors. This poses a significant challenge for researchers, who have to try to identify the sources of the noise and find ways to reduce noise levels.

Exposition chimique (Chemical exposure)
We are all exposed to chemical products on a daily basis, but in some workplaces, it is impossible to avoid this exposure. Over the medium and long terms, such exposure (to lead, for example) can have serious effects on the vital organs.

Chutes, chocs et coups (Falls, impacts and blows)
People who work in warehouses or hospitals, or on streets or roofs, are at constant risk of falling, be it from heights or on slippery ground. The body can also sustain other types of impacts and blows. Safety harnesses, special soles and lockout/tagout procedures are all good ways to protect workers’ physical well-being.

Six complementary capsules titled Facteurs de changement (Change factors) are also offered. They present six researchers from different disciplines who work in OHS.

Mensaje del medio

The challenge was to produce a television series on occupational health and safety research for the general public. The programs had to capture the attention of both newcomers to the OHS field and experts. Several different angles were used to convey the message. The capsules titled Incursion au labo (A look inside the lab), En quête de solutions (Finding solutions) and Je l‘ai testé (I tested it) take the viewer into the world of OHS research. Experts talk about the issues and the technological and scientific breakthroughs. The theme is also covered with an amusing touch of humour, particularly in the capsule Facteurs humains avec Neev (Human factors with Neev), a comedian who talks about the issues and ends with a key message, and in the capsule En 1 minute (In 1 minute), which is a news flash with animated computer graphics. The visit to a workplace in the capsule Sur le terrain (In the field) provides a concrete look at how OHS is actually lived in organizations and at what is done to protect workers. Lastly, a testimonial is given by a victim of a work accident or an occupational disease, who shares his experience.

Contexto

The Facteurs de risque (Risk factors) series represents a collaborative initiative by Savoir.média and the IRSST. Savoir.média is a Canadian (French-language) media organization promoting knowledge. A content producer, broadcaster and feed reader, its www.savoir.media platform showcases original productions that give the floor to renowned Québec experts, while also featuring major foreign series. Its constantly evolving platform hosts articles and a variety of podcast series to complement its video offerings. With 1,459,813 unique visitors watching its telecasts (data from September 16 to November 10, 2019) and nearly 140,000 unique visitors to the savoir.média website (Google Analytics data from April 1 to November 30, 2019), the programs are assured broad dissemination. The IRSST provided financial support, participated in the research and acted as content producer for all the episodes in this collaborative initiative. All the episodes feature IRSST researchers and scientific professionals.
