Ziel und Zweck

Dear Sir/Madam, This application is to submit the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health's (IOSH) ‘No Time to Lose campaign – working together to beat occupational cancer’ as an entry for the International Media Festival for Prevention. If you have any questions or need further information, please email me at jasmeen.daji@iosh.co.uk or phone on +44 (0)116 257 3258. Kind regards, Jasmeen Daji Campaigns Communications Co-ordinator, IOSH

Research by the International Commission on Occupational Health in 2009 estimated that cancer caused by work claims the lives of at least 666,000 people a year worldwide. That’s one death every 47 seconds. In Britain, a study commissioned by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 2012 found that almost 14,000 new cases of cancer caused by work are registered each year and around 8,000 deaths a year are caused by occupational cancer. The No Time to Lose campaign, launched by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) in 2014, aims to get carcinogenic exposure issues more widely understood and help businesses take action. The campaign is working to: • raise awareness of a significant health issue facing workers • suggest some solutions to tackle the problem • offer free practical, original materials to businesses to help them deliver effective prevention programmes. Since launching campaign, IOSH has developed free resources including films, toolbox talks, interactive quizzes, and literature such as factsheets, posters and leaflets to help businesses raise awareness of carcinogens at work such as diesel engine exhaust emissions, solar radiation and silica dust. The Institution is encouraging businesses to tackle occupational cancer by signing up to the No Time to Lose campaign pledge. The pledge is a six-point action plan outlining what a business is doing or will do to manage carcinogenic exposures at work. Organisations can get involved in No Time to Lose by providing a supporting statement and making a commitment to help raise awareness occupational cancer through its communications channels too. No Time to Lose also provides a free ‘Ask the experts’ service for anyone who has a question about work-related cancers or managing harmful substances. Over the last two years, the No Time to Lose campaign has reached over 59 million people around the world through media coverage and social media. More than 180 organisations worldwide have formally supported the campaign to help raise awareness of occupational cancer. Over 90 businesses have signed up to the pledge to prevent occupational cancer which has resulted in over 470,000 employees being more aware of carcinogenic exposures at work. The campaign website has had 77,000 visits and the free resources have been downloaded 58,000 times. The campaign has been presented at 122 events in countries around the world including Amsterdam, Bulgaria, the Caribbean, Croatia, Cyprus, Dubai, Egypt, France, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Macedonia, Mauritius, Oman, Singapore and Slovenia. IOSH has also collaborated with organisations such as the HSE and BOHS to deliver the ‘Working together to beat occupational cancer – spotlight on silica’ presentation at events around the UK. No Time to Lose campaign supporters such as Laing O’Rourke, Royal Mail Group, Network Rail and Wates Group have shared their good practice case studies on how they’ve managed carcinogens in their workplace, which have been publicised via IOSH’s communications channels. IOSH has also worked with overseas organisations such as MTR Corporation Ltd, Society of Safety Engineers Ljubljana, and the Center for Safety and Health at Work in Bulgaria to adapt and translate the No Time to Lose resources to reach employees overseas. In December 2016, IOSH launched a global commitment made industry leaders, academics and safety and health experts to tackle silica dust at work. ‘Tackling respirable crystalline silica together: a cross-industry commitment’ is a 12-month plan of action to achieve three principal objectives: 1. To work together to reduce exposure to RCS through effective monitoring and management of dust 2. To increase awareness and understanding of the potential health risks associated with exposure to RCS in order to change attitudes and behaviours 3. To share good practice on the management of RCS across industry sectors. The group has agreed to take action to tackle these objectives and will meet again in November 2017 to review progress. The next phase of the campaign will focus on asbestos management and will be launched later this year.
