The aim of the project was to produce user friendly training material, including DVD footage, aimed at workers in the food and drink industry. The concept chosen included a high impact introductory piece which draws the analogy between the fact that in some countries electricity is used to legally kill those convicted of very serious crimes. Worryingly in the food and drink industry we often take electricity for granted even though it has the potential to kill someone in a similar way if the right controls and procedures are not in place. The DVD is designed to make people sit up and think initially about this fact and then goes on to describe the control measures required to protect users and electricians from harm in a more conventional way. The training package specifically targets both those working in the food and drink industry and the hazards encountered such as wet environments, exposure of large sometimes multicultural worker populations and a time pressured environment. There is no similar material available on the market aimed at the food and drink industry. The DVD is aimed at operators, managers and electricians and it is envisaged that it will form part of an organisation’s overall electrical training package. In addition to the DVD, the package consists of supporting guidance and quizzes which can be used to reinforce and evaluate the knowledge gained. In total the training package consists of: • An Electrical Safety DVD • Guidance notes for managers • Guidance notes for Electricians • 5 x A3 poster designs • An operators Toolbox Talk • A managers’ quiz; and • An electricians’ Quiz The project was developed and supported by an Electrical Steering group sub-committee consisting of members of the IOSH Food and drink and Drink group, a technical specialist and a video development company. The production of the guidance was also supported by the Policy team at IOSH who worked well and in close co-operation with the group. The project was funded with support (both financial, technical and artistically) from IOSH and the Food and drink & Drink Group are grateful for this. The training package was launched at the Food and drink and Drink Conference on 8th Oct 13. The DVD and associated guidance was issued in hard copy in limited numbers at the Food and Drink conference and has been loaded on to the IOSH website in Oct 13. All of the material is available, free of charge, to both members and non-members. Since the launch of the project in October 2013, the videos have had over 1,800 views on YouTube and 681 videos have been sent out. The requests for DVDs have also come from outside the Food & Drink industry, ie rail and marine services. The Group has presented at a number of branch meetings including North Wales and East Anglia. An interactive event was also held in April 2014 and the feedback was excellence.
