Client Handling in Health Care

Film: Duration in minutes

4:49 minutes

Product description

Two Ministry of Labour officials - an inspector and an ergonomist - conduct an inspection in a health care facility, with an emphasis on MSD preventon. They focus on patient handling using machines and proper handling techniques to prevent MSDs in workers. These "inspector" videos use ministry inspectors, not actors. By showing what health care facilities must do to be in compliance with the ergonomic requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, the ministry expects to achieve increased cooperation during its inspections and improved workplace health and safety in the health care sector. As well, by using actual ministry inspectors in the video instead of actors, the video helps put a "human face" on our inspection staff, showing that they are experts in their field.

Aims and objectives

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the number one type of lost-time work injury reported to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) in Ontario. MSDs: •cause pain and suffering for thousands of workers every year, and •cost Ontario’s workplaces hundreds of millions of dollars due to worker absence and lost productivity. MSDs are strongly linked to known risk factors or hazards in the workplace. MSDs are common in the health care sector where patient/client handling is a major issue. This video shows how Ministry of Labour inspectors inspect a health care workplace for MSD prevention.

Video is a cost-effective vehicle to get a message across to a large audience. Videos are put on the Ministry of Labour website. Various associations and trade media link to them. Employers use the videos during health and safety meetings. As well, copies of the videos are sent to associations for use during conferences, etc.

Target audience

Employers and workers in the health care sector - this includes acute care hospitals, long-term care institutions, nursing homes, etc.
