Product description

The Institute for Work & Health (IWH) is an independent, not-for-profit research organization based in Toronto, Canada. Our goal is to protect and improve the health and safety of working people by providing useful, relevant research in two key areas: (1) preventing work-related injury and illness, and (2) promoting recovery and work functioning following injury and illness. Our work provides impartial, evidence-based guidance to government policy-makers, health and safety associations, workers and employers, occupational health & safety professionals, disability management professionals and clinicians. The main vehicle for sharing this guidance is our website.

Aims and objectives

Evidence-based health and safety policies, programs and practices are crucial to improving the protection of workers and reducing the incidence of job-related injuries and illnesses. Reliable and valid research is the backbone of this evidence base. Therefore, research organizations need to make their findings widely available to stakeholders who are looking for the best evidence. An accessible and inviting website is one of the best ways to do this.

At the Institute for Work & Health, research results are shared with stakeholders through an integrated knowledge transfer and exchange/communications process, a core part of our mandate alongside research. The Institute’s website is our main way of making these findings available and accessible to people in Canada and around the world.

In March 2018, we launched a completely redesigned and reorganized website. Done internally by a small communications team, the website's overhaul involved more than a year of testing and analyzing our users’ habits and preferences. We thought long and hard about ways to present our research, findings and impact. The result is a website that is lay-friendly, well-organized, pleasing to look at, and rich in content.

The website includes over 2,900 content pages. Visitors can find out about our research findings by theme, topic and project (Our Research), and get both lay-friendly and scientific findings through newsletter articles, research summaries, videos, journal articles and more (Publications & Resources). They can learn about the scientists and others behind the research (Our People), read how we share and measure the impact of our research (How We Work), and keep up on what's new at the Institute, including our upcoming presentations (News & Events).

The website is popular. We get, on average, about 150,000 to 200,000 unique visitors per quarter. And these visitors come from around the world. For example, in March 2020, half of the almost 65,000-plus visitors to the website were from the United States and Canada. Yet, 500 to 3,700 visitors came from one of another 12 countries, ranging from India, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. Indeed, in total, there was at least one visitor from 191 different countries.
